In the 1960s, many states still had barriers that prohibited all citizens from fully participating in our democracy.

But after Bloody Sunday in 1965, the impact of Jim Crow policies could no longer be ignored. When the Voting Rights Act became law, a new era of participation began. By the end of 1965, a quarter of a million new Black voters had registered, and Black voter registration increased dramatically across the South.


We cannot take these rights for granted. In recent years, key provisions of the Voting Rights Act have been dismantled, jeopardizing our rights and opening the door to discriminatory practices that disenfranchise voters.
